How to fix fret buzz on my Fender Strat?
My Fender has never had this problem, but ever since yesterday, the 9th fret on the E string of my Fender has been making a strange buzzing sound. I have increased, and decreased the action on the string, with little change. I honestly don’t know what to do anymore.
Have you looked at it very closely to make sure it doesn’t have a dent or burr? I’ve seen very tiny damage buzz frets. You might try a piece of steel wool and a gentle motion parallel with the fret to see if you can smooth it down a little. That will clean any burrs without scratching the metal any more. (it will also clean any gunk that has collected on the edges of the fret.)
I had the same problem with my old custom built for my short, fat fingers Burns London Vista Sonic many years ago. Something had banged against a fret bar (or rubbed against it. I never found out which or how.) It might have even been when I broke the high E, or while trying to put on the replacement in the rush between sets. I didn’t notice the buzz until we started playing some ballads with mellow chords. The earlier set was mostly fuzz box, so the buzzing wasn’t noticeable.
A little elbow grease and light rubbing with steel wool and the buzz went away. (Our lead guitarist had some steel wool in his case as he had been taught that trick by another guitarist.) Rub very gently along the length of the fret from just beyond the affected string to the edge for a few minutes and try the sound. Stay on the metal of the fret. That way you don’t damage the finish. It should be the fret bar between your 9th fret and the body if it is a burr, but don’t rule out the next bar towards the body.
I have also seen fret bars hit on the edge and actually lifted slightly from their slots. Usually that affects at least 2 strings , but it could be a gentle enough lifting to only bother 1. If you find a slight lift at the end of the fret bar, you’ll want a pro guitar repairer to reset or replace the bar. Your “Strat” is too nice to allow anyone short of a real pro to repair! Replacing with a new one is the best way to go as you know it will be smooth, but depending on the age of your guitar, you might need to replace them all. They could all be worn and a new bar could stand higher than the others and destroy the sound of adjacent frets. A raised bar could be between the 9th fret and the body, or the 8th fret and the body. If the 8th is raised slightly, the string could be barely rubbing it when you press down on the 9th. (it would be slightly higher than the 9th and thus the string could contact it. (assuming your strings sit as close to the frets for quicker action as my “Burns” did.)
