Fingerstyle and Flatpicking Acoustic Guitar Lessons   by David Lambert

I was a music instructor for the guitar for over 15 years and have been playing acoustic guitar for over 40 years.

We will have a lots of subject materials that we will cover on this site. Fingerstyle Guitar and Flatpicking Guitar will be the two picking styles that we will be covering here.

Flatpicking Lessons:

Also known as Bluegrass Guitar, or plectrum guitar picking, this style will be covered in detail from the basics of how to hold the flatpick, how to position your right hand for most efficient picking, and how to profit from practicing speed. We will also go into detail about the left hand techniques, such as hand and finger placements, how to finger notes the best way, forming and changing between chords very quickly and much more. These fundamental methods may seem unnecessary, but if you don’t start out right with the basics, you practicing abilities will suffer somewhat. The difference between a really outstanding guitar players and the average player is mainly in the proper approach.

Also, we will cover how to read TAB or tablature in detail. TAB or tablature is the musician’s shorthand for those of us who cannot read standard notation. We will reference hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides and bends very extensively. These are also known as ornamentals. Even though some of these techniques border in the intermediate to advanced levels of playing, you will soon master them by practicing our lesson materials.

Lastly, we will break apart some of the best breaks from such impressive flatpicking artist’s as Tony Rice, Doc Watson and Norman Blake. By learning a few of these breaks you will soon find yourself progressing from an average guitar player to a master flatpicker.

Acoustic Guitar Lessons – Fingerstyle Technique:

This style has it’s roots based in ragtime and blues type guitar playing. Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Merle Travis and countless other artist’s took this style and put their own unique spin on it. While this guitar style proves to be somewhat challenging to the guitarist, it does give a tremendous amount of satisfaction to the player and the listener alike.

Having a good feel of the guitar with a flatpick is recommended prior to jumping into fingerstyle guitar. This will assist your transition. If you discover many of the basics of flatpicking guitar, you will observe that many of them are applicable directly to fingerstyle guitar such as, left hand techniques, speed training, reading TAB, ornamentals, and much more. Not to mention that you should become very familiar with scales, positions and the guitar fretboard.

You will start out very slowly with a few simple exercises, and gradually get your feet wet in the procedure. Although the right hand technique will be our primary focus for fingerstyle, there will be subtle changes to the left hand approach that will be addressed as well. In order for you to create your own unique style, we will take actual song samples and examine them in detail, just how they are playing and why certain methods are used.

We will do this through taking sample breaks from such guitar greats as Chet Atkins, Merle Travis and Jerry Reed and many others. Let’s profit from the knowledge of the fingerstyle masters. You can then make adjustments to these arrangements, and create your own unique style. After all, if you can ‘rip-off’ a impressive lick exactly how it was done by means of Merle Travis, you would impress yourself and a great deal of other players. Think how much more of an accomplishment it would be to re-arrange the break and make it uniquely your own. you will learn how to do that.
